Malcolm Burleigh is the U.S. Missions director of the Assemblies of God. It is important to understand the impact that this represents for revival in the nation. This goes much deeper in scope that just having church meetings.
Every day, he makes decision on how to reach college campus, drug addicts, and lost people on a national level. The wider consequences of these choices have eternal value.
What he believes God is doing will change things for 310 universities, hundreds of church planters, dozen of RV church builders, 200 gospel based drug recovery programs, and over a hundred high school outreaches. This is huge.
He is also a man that came off the streets in Chicago when he was saved. He understands the hard realities of the battle be faced in the inner cities of America. This is not just textbook knowledge but real life experience.
In addition to this, he is one the Executive Presbytery of the Assemblies of God and he is a decision maker. What he brings into the meetings is the representation of most non-church based evangelism and helps other make national decisions based on the information.
So what does his army of evangelists look like? There is over 18,000 people that are under him in some way. Over a 1,000 of them are full time US Missionaries and 600 chaplains in hospitals, jails and the military.
Chi Alpha (College Evangelism)
One of the most important ministries in all of the Assemblies of God is Chi Alpha. It is the college ministry to over 300 campuses. This is the front line of reaching people for the gospel.
It is believed that up to 3 out of every 4 high schooler in our youth group will have walked away and lost their salvation by the end of their freshman year in college. 3 out of every 4.
This is why I believe in Chi Alpha so much. They reach these kids with the gospel every week and show them what the presence and power of God can do in their midst. Out of these meetings, students are saved and baptized in the Holy Spirit.
Church Multiplication Network
Burleigh works directly with Chris Railey that leads a network of church planters that has planted over 3,000 churches in the last nine years. They also work directly with many wishing to plant a church at conferences around the country.
The vision is to plant a healthy “Spirit empowered” church in every community in the country. This is in addition to the churches that are in place currently.
There is also a movement to revive some old churches that are dying with fresh pastors and re-launch them in hard to reach parts of the country.
There is a group of people that lives out of RVs that just go from place to place to build churches. This is called the Mission America Placement Service or MAPS. They also help with evangelism.
They really are the hands and feet of a lot of work that happens to facilities all over America. It is very effective and they need our prayers. They have used to build churches, remodel the Dream Center and to make dorms for Teen Challenge.
Many smaller ministries are the ones that benefit from this the most. They couldn’t afford the labor to build their facilities. MAPS comes along and makes that happen for them.
I came to Christ under the preaching of Steve Hill, a graduate of Teen Challenge. The amount of great preachers who was once a drug addict reached by Teen Challenge is quite long. He is just one of the most well known of them.
Starting in the 1950’s in New York City by David Wilkerson, the fiery Pentecostal preacher. It grew from there to now have 200 different programs around the country and dozen more outside the United States staffed by missionaries.
It has been said that they have the best effective rate of any drug recovery program and has even been endorsed by former President, George W. Bush.
The last area of US Missions that Malcolm Burleigh oversees is called Youth Alive which is bible clubs in public high schools.
These missionaries work with students training them to be evangelists in their school. They are critical to see a move of the Holy Spirit.
Local Assembly of God churches partner with schools and work together to develop these bible clubs and ways that the church can help the school in practical ways. It is very effective.
