Jezebel Spirit? : Statement from Azusa Report

There has been a lot of discussion happening over email and Facebook about the series I did on Jezebel recently and some good friends expressed concern that I was giving “a free pass” at demonic behavior.

I maintain that many people are falsely accused of this because they are not bowing down to a pastor. Many true prophetic voices have be falsely called a false prophet or Jezebel. I have seen this played out dozen of times.

I believe in spiritual warfare. I just don’t believe in the “when in doubt, cast it out” crowd. There is not a false prophet around every corner and a demon under every rock. Many spiritual warfare people are more fixed on devils than Jesus.

The bottom line is as a ministry, Azusa Report holds that the devil is defeated, death is a lie, and hell has no power. Jesus took the keys to the death, hell and grave. As a believer, we believe that the Holy Spirit in us is greater than he that is in the world.

Many people want to talk about being delivered from this spirit and that spirit. My question is not what are you being delivered from but WHO are you being delivered to? I believe the blood of Jesus is what matters.

Demonized Christians?

The truth is that when Jesus said, “It is finished,” He meant it. Your deliverance is finished. You have overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the work of your testimony. (Revelation 12:11) Demons do exist but they defeated in the believer’s life.

Some people believe that a believer that is filled with the Holy Spirit can have have a demon. I am not sure where this idea came from but it is not biblical.

A Christian can be delivered from life controlling problems but they can be not controlled by the spirit. Jesus is Lord of their lives and He is only the Lord.

The same passage that speaks of being delivered from fear also tells us to have a spirit of power, love, and sound mind. If we cast out fear, do we cast in love?

Scriptural, the idea that the originally had was the spirit of ____ was really the attitude of whatever they were speaking of. They were saying do not have an attitude of fear but be convicted of God’s power, love and soundness of mind. We can’t cast out an attitude, not change it by the work of the Holy Spirit.

The truth of the matter is believers do not have a spirit of jealousy but they have the sin of jealousy. Let’s call it what it is: sin. There is not a devil making you be jealous; you are choosing to do it on your own accord.

Almost every time I have seen a believer have a life controlling problem, it was NOT a devil doing it but them choosing to not address the problem at hand. In all of these cases, the person did not deliverance but to repent of their sin.

Have you ever wondered why the Greek word, daimonízomai is not used after Acts 2:1-4?

Mixture is dangerous to Assemblies

I think what people really mean when they talk about the “spirit of Jezebel” is people who are living in sin and getting others to live in sin as well. Is the the spirit of some woman that lives in the times of Elijah and or a lady in Thyatira? Unlikely. Similar sin will look like similar spirits.

Make no mistake about it, someone with a strong leadership gift but living in open compromise (sinful living) can change some serious problems in the local assembly. I have seen whole churches split over strong leadership types living in sin.

The devil didn’t make it happen. Several leaders with a different vision for the assembly changed it. Division is nothing more than multiple vision for the same group. Pride did far more damage to the church than any devil could have.

What happens is you have a mixture of the prophetic and movement of the Holy Spirit with unchecked sins like pride, territoriality, and envy. This deadly mixture of the prophetic and sin leads to major problems in the local assembly. I have been guilty of this myself.

Real Jezebel spirits

The ones that does real damage is more the witches that come to put curses on churches. They are not believers, they only come to do their dark magic. Most of these people are well hidden. They do not try and be part of the community. They come, do their spells and get out.

One church that I know of in Kansas had this happening. She literally ran out every pastor that came within six months. Many of them was not even in ministry after they left this church. A friend became the pastor and he realized quickly what was happening with this lady.

In a short visit to the church, the pastor and myself confronted the witch in a meeting and she ran out of the building never to return. In the aftermath, God started moving and people were getting saved, healed and delivered again.

The bottom line is the people living in sin can be hurtful and do a lot of damage. Hurt people hurt people. However, the witches that operate in secret that are not even believers are the real threat.
