Calvary Chapel’s Greg Laurie becomes Southern Baptist? : A Pentecostal response

Greg Laurie has been a poster child to Calvary Chapel for many years. He has now jumped ship to become South Baptist. This is not a big surprise. In reality, it is more from one dead movement to another one with more resources.

This is a sad story because we are talking about someone that came to salvation under the ministry of Lonnie Frisbee. It is almost unbelievable to see someone progressed from afterglow revival meetings to joining a movement that is basically intelligent. However, this is the history of Calvary Chapel in many ways. It is a movement that started out of the Foursquare movement and ended up being glorified bible studies.

What they need is a movement back to their roots in the Pentecostal movement, not moving away from the power of Holy Spirit. Only the Lord the experiences that people had in those afterglow services. Jill Austin told of some of them before she passed away. Amazing!

Greg Laurie and Harvest crusades

The gospel of the Kingdom has always been a challenge to him. I have been in a “crusade” where he basically was giving a message that was appealing to the mind to mentally accepted the worldview of Christianity. That’s it. No power. No anointing. No miracles.

If I make it sound like it was like sitting in a seminary class at a Baptist theological seminary; that is because that is basically what was happening. As an evangelist, I was sitting there wanting to grab the microphone and preach the actual gospel about the bloody savior on the old rugged cross and call the people to repent of their sins so time of refreshing can come. (Acts 3:19)

It is safe to say that being in the Baptist church that preaches to the mind and not the heart will be an easy fit for this type of ministry. I am not sure how many people will actually come to saving faith in Christ but I do know angels rejoice over just one coming to faith.

Why I am sad about people like Greg

The church is becoming more a philosophical position that the people branded by divine fire every day. We are happy with mental agreement calling it salvation. If that is all the gospel is to us, we have lost the reality of what it means to be born again. Coming to Christ is not like auditing a class at your community college.

Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.

Notice it says to repent. That means to surrender your life. It does not mean to check a line like you do if you are a republican or a democrat. We are to give our lives to Jesus and turn to Him for the remission of sins. However, it is hard for people to repent of sins when preacher like Laurie are afraid to tell the people to repent or that sin will send you to hell.

They want to jump right to times of the refreshing without talking about the message of the cross. As Steve Hill would put it, ” be around the cross won’t save you. Only getting on the Cross will redeem you.”

I remain hopeful for weak preachers like Greg Laurie but this wishy washy gospel is not helping anyone.
